EnerTech Receives $1 Million from SoCalGas for Achieving Advanced Energy Savings

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (April 29, 2009) – Proving that energy efficiency can result in significant savings, EnerTech Environmental’s SlurryCarb™ facility in Rialto, California, received yesterday a $1 million incentive check from Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) for its initiative to conserve energy and protect the environment. The facility is projected to save in excess of 3 million therms annually as a result of participating in the SoCalGas Savings by Design program.

Savings by Design provides technical and financial resources to help commercial and industrial customers save energy and money when they design, expand, or change new or existing processes and facilities. The five processes that were optimized at the Rialto facility included an anaerobic digester, heat transfer fluid system, heat exchanger, thermal oxidizer, and dryer.

The Rialto facility is EnerTech’s first commercial biosolids-to-renewable energy facility. The facility converts biosolids (processed sewage sludge) from the Southern California area into a renewable fuel. Biosolids are a common and easily renewable waste that all communities produce and must manage. In the United States alone, over 7 million tons of biosolids are produced each year.

EnerTech’s facility is providing a long-term biosolids recycling plan for five Southern California municipalities. Customers include Orange County Sanitation District, The County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, and the cities of Rialto, Riverside, and San Bernardino. By transforming biosolids from a waste product into a fuel source, the Rialto facility will generate over 60,000 tons of renewable fuel, called E-Fuel, annually. That fuel will be used by local Southern California cement kilns to offset their coal use and reduce annual local greenhouse gas emissions by over 80,000 tons.
